I've just sent off for the "birth certificate" for my bay window'd camper :-)

Also, i have since found out that you can apply for the birth certificate for any VW thats ever been built apparently....if any1's interested :-)

Its very easy to do, and takes about 6 - 8 weeks to come back from wolfsberg themselves (the historic department)

How do you go about doing this?

To get an official VW Birth Certificate, VW requires a payment of 35 Euro (or the equivalent in US dollars - Exchange rate calculator) by credit card (VISA/Mastercard only), check, or cash along with your full name, VIN (chassis) number.

Personal checks can be made out to "Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen"

You can mail credit card details or a check to:

The easiest way may be to pay by credit card online:
On the VW Museum Website, you can click on Urkundengenerator (Certificate Generator) and use your credit card online
Click on English at the top of the site to see the form in English or click here:

You will get an A4 (approx. 8.5"x11") letter that has:
Build date
Delivery date
Delivery Destination
Original colors and upholstery
Optional extras (M-codes)

Note: The museum no longer provides the engine number on the certificate but if you provide your engine number in your request, they will verify if it is the original engine.

Ahh i see! i prob woulda done that on my mk2 aswell, that spent its early life in germany for abit then got imported i think.
